Witbank Dam, Dec 2003

On December 6th, it is my sons birthday. His request for this year was not a party, but "could we go to a dam to do some Bass fishing". I have been to Witbank a number of times in the past, and as it is an hour from our home in Benoni, Witbank was where we decided to go.

The park is a municipal caravan park and as such, not the greatest. Although the area is fairly well lawned, there is not as many trees as I would like. You can see the one in the first photo is not all that big. Also, braais are few and far between. Bring your own grid and expect to make a fire on the ground.

The ablutions are in a state of disrepair. The whole weekend, I only used the toilet for the necessary. I showered when I got home on Sunday.

If you are a fishaholic, the dam is great. There is plentiful Bass and you are also allowed to ski, tube and generally mess around.

There are swimming pools but when we were there, children were being bussed into the resort and about 2 to 3 hundred children were running amuck. The mess left afterwards was terrible although the camp workers did clean it up each morning. Fortunately the caravan park is separated by palisade fencing from the "Day visitors" area. Theft could have been quite a problem otherwise.

Would I go again? Yes, under conditions where I want to fish and ski, the dam is ideal. If you want to fish only, Loskop is the place to be.

Till next time, enjoy the photographs.

This was our campsite. Although the area is fairly well lawned, there is not as many trees as I would like. You can see the one in the first photo is not all that big.
Here is John fishing near the dam wall. He did get a bite near one of the water level markers, but unfortunately, the Bass jumped off.
This is a view of the dam from the camp site. The water level was very low and necessitated an long walk down to the waters edge.
My daughter (Hayleigh) and I near the dam wall.

Until next time, keep well and happy holidays.
